Frequently asked Questions
What is the lymphatic system?
The lymphatic system is a network of vessels, nodes, and organs that help remove waste, toxins, and fight infections. It carries lymph fluid, which contains immune cells, throughout the body to filter out harmful substances and support immune function.
Key components include lymph nodes, the spleen, tonsils, and bone marrow. It also helps maintain fluid balance and aids in digestion.

Lymphatic Therapy is beneficial for those who are undergoing surgery and those who are not.
Lymphatic massage and complimenting therapies like light therapy, compression garments and compression pump devices can be beneficial for pain management as well as maintaining a regular limb shape and size, reducing fluid accumulation, and sustaining mobility.
For patients undergoing surgery the recommended timeframe to begin lymphatic therapy is 10-14 days following surgery.

Always consult with a healthcare provider before beginning therapy.
How often should I receive lymphatic therapy?
The frequency of lymphatic therapy depends on individual needs and health conditions. Weekly appointments are a good place to begin however, a treatment plan will be developed for you during your initial consultation. This will consider your goals for treatment and your individual needs.
How is lipoedema different from general obesity?
Lipoedema is distinct from general obesity because the fat accumulates in a symmetrical pattern around the hips, thighs, and buttocks, arms and forearms.
The hands, feet, torso, and face remain relatively unaffected.
The fat in lipoedema can also be tender to touch. Hypersensitivity and hypermobility are common symptoms. This is not typically the case with general obesity or increased weight gain.
Is liposuction a good treatment option for lipoedema?
It is a big procedure and should not be decided on lightly. Complications are common (infections, body dysmorphia, scarring, lymphoedema). Consultation with a plastic surgeon/s that specialise in lipoedema is necessary.
Liposuction can be an effective treatment for removing the abnormal fat deposits caused by lipoedema. Specialized liposuction techniques, such as water-assisted or power-assisted liposuction, and the use of ‘tumescent fluid’ are designed to target the fat without damaging surrounding tissues. This can lead to improved body contouring, sparing of the lymphatic system and reduced surgical complications.
